Do You Need a Coop Heater? What Your Flock Actually Needs in Winter

Type "coop heater" into a search box in November and the shops will sell you one. Panel heaters, heated pads, flat radiant plates, and the 250-watt clamp lamp that feed stores have carried for decades. The listings give you a wattage and a coverage area in square feet. Not one that we found will tell you how many degrees it raises a coop, and we went looking specifically for that number.

For the large majority of backyard flocks, a heated coop is a downgrade. Cold is rarely what kills a hen. Fire does, and so does a dead heater in an ice storm, and heating a coop is how you invite both of them in. The keepers running birds through -30F and -40F winters are, disproportionately, the ones running no heat at all, which is the thing that moved us hardest while we read.

Not everybody agrees, and the keepers who disagree aren't fools. One of them in northern Canada watched three of twelve birds stop walking on the third day of -38C, put in a roof-mounted infrared heater, brought the coop up to about -25C, and turned it off when the snap broke. That's a rescue, and we would have done the same thing. The argument here's about running a heater all season, not about what you do at 4am when a hen can't stand up.

What a hen does on a cold night

A hen's body runs about 105-107F. Under her contour feathers is a layer of down, and she can thicken the pocket of warm air it holds by fluffing up. She tucks her head under a wing. She sits down over her own feet, which is why toes are usually in less trouble than the comb on a bad night, and she roosts pressed up against the rest of the flock. Six birds in a right-sized coop hold that shared warmth far better than the same six spread out in a barn. (A Brahma in December looks about twice the bird she's in July.)

Moving air at bird level is what breaks that down. It strips the warm layer away as fast as she rebuilds it. Damp does the other kind of damage, and it's the one people miss: hens exhale a lot of water, their droppings are mostly water, and a sealed coop goes humid within hours. Humid air at freezing temperatures is what takes combs and wattles. Keepers on the cold-weather threads repeat that more often than they repeat anything else about winter.

A heater doesn't address either one. It also rewards the instinct that causes most of the damage, which is to shut the coop up tight so the heat stays inside. Every vent you close to keep a heater efficient is a vent that was carrying moisture out.

Heat lamps, and how coops burn

The clamp-on heat lamp is the most dangerous object routinely sold for a chicken coop. It's a 250-watt bulb, hot enough to scorch wood, held up by a spring clip over dry pine shavings or straw. The air in a coop is thick with feather dust. There's no smoke detector in there and nobody in the building at 3am, and birds startle and fly at night, and clips slip off the rail somebody clamped them to. (The red 250-watt bulb has barely changed in fifty years, which is part of why it is still the cheapest thing on the shelf.)

We aren't going to hand you a national fire statistic. We looked, and we couldn't find one that's honestly attributable to coop heating rather than to farm buildings in general, and inventing a number to make a safety point is how a site stops deserving trust. What we can say is narrower. First-hand accounts of coops and barns burning are easy to find among keepers, they follow the same script nearly every time, and the loss is usually total, because the birds are shut in.

If a heat lamp is hanging in your coop tonight, a better bulb isn't the fix. Run a chain or a wire as a second independent support, so the clip isn't the only thing holding the lamp up. Use a ceramic socket rather than a plastic one, and a guard over the bulb. Then work out a plan to take the whole thing down before next winter, because everything in this paragraph is a stopgap.

What happens when a heated coop loses power

We started this article meaning to rank coop heaters. That was what the plan said, and the reading turned it around inside a day, mostly on this one point. A flock that roosts all winter at 40F never finishes acclimating. Those birds are living on the heater: they don't carry the feather condition or the metabolic adjustment that unheated birds build gradually from September on.

Then the ice storm arrives, which is exactly when the power goes out, and the coop drops thirty or forty degrees in a few hours over birds with no margin. For an unheated flock a hard freeze is an unpleasant night. For a heated flock, the same night with a tripped breaker is a body count. Cycling gets less attention and matters too, because running a heater on one cold night and off the next puts birds through swings they handle worse than they handle steady cold.

If you heat and you mean it, the heat has to be as reliable as the roof. A dedicated circuit, a thermostat, and a plan for the outage. Most backyard setups are nowhere near that. A half-committed heater leaves a flock worse off than no heater at all, which is an unsatisfying thing to tell somebody who has already bought one.

Ventilation versus draft

Ventilation is open area high up, above head height for a hen on the roost, usually at the gable ends or under the eaves, covered in hardware cloth. Warm moist air rises and goes out through it, and takes the humidity with it. A draft is air moving across the birds themselves at roost level, through a gap in the siding or a vent cut too low. Same air, different height. Get the height wrong and you either cook the coop in its own moisture or strip heat off a hen all night long.

So the winter job is closing the low gaps and opening the high ones. That usually means a jigsaw, some hardware cloth and an afternoon. (Hardware cloth is welded wire mesh, not chicken wire, and keepers will correct you on that inside one reply.) A rough rule keepers use is generous permanent ventilation high in the coop, well above roost height and out of the wind, which sounds like far too much open area until you spend a January morning looking at frost on the inside of a tight coop wall.

Two cheap things belong here as well. Use a wide flat roost, a 2x4 laid flat side up, so a squatting hen covers her own toes instead of gripping a round bar. And wrap the run rather than the coop: clear tarp or greenhouse plastic on the windward sides keeps birds outside and moving on days they would otherwise stand in the pop door and refuse to come out.

Deep litter, and the heat already in the building

Deep litter means adding fresh bedding on top through the winter instead of stripping the coop out, letting the pack build up several inches deep and start to compost from the bottom. It insulates the floor and gives birds something dry to sink their feet into. It also makes a modest amount of heat while it works, and it's the only heat source in this article with no cord attached, though nobody we read has put a number on how much heat that comes to. (The forums write it Deep Litter Method, capitals and all, which makes it sound more procedural than putting down another bag of shavings.)

It only works dry, which puts you straight back on ventilation. A damp pack is an ammonia problem and a respiratory problem. Keepers disagree about what to put in it, and they disagree hard. Some say straw sheds moisture and never compacts into an ice slab; others say straw holds damp far worse than shavings do and won't have it in the coop. We aren't going to settle that here, because we haven't seen anything that settles it.

Coop size is a free lever in the other direction. A cavernous coop for four hens is harder to keep habitable than a snug one, because there's more air for the birds to warm and more wall to lose it through. If you're still building, size for the flock you have and not for the flock chicken math will hand you next spring, pullets and all.

Who needs heat, and what to give them

There are four real exceptions, and for each of them the blanket "chickens don't need heat" answer is wrong. Being handed the wrong answer costs birds, so read the list even if none of it looks like your flock.

  • Chicks under about six weeks, before they feather out. They need supplemental heat and it belongs in a brooder, not in the coop. Use a radiant heating plate rather than a lamp. It warms them from above at their own height, they walk out from under it when they have had enough, and there's no glowing bulb hanging over bedding.
  • A sick, injured or badly molting bird. Move that individual somewhere sheltered and warm, and if she's ill, talk to a vet. Heating a whole coop for one hen is the wrong tool for the job.
  • Bantams, and large single-combed breeds like Leghorns, sold into a winter nobody bred them for. Cold hardiness arrives two different ways, and the difference shows up at the comb. Orpingtons, Australorps and Barred Rocks carry heavy plumage and body mass, and they still have single combs, which is the part that takes frostbite. Wyandottes, Brahmas and Chanteclers have rose, pea and cushion combs, and that's the trait that resists it. (Where a rose comb stops and a cushion comb starts is its own long-running argument, and the birds take no part in it.) Feed stores stock what sells in their region, which isn't always what suits your winter.
  • A genuine emergency. Temperatures far outside your normal range, sustained for days, with birds that stop eating and drinking or can't stand. That's a rescue, and a rescue ends when the weather does.

Each of those is solved by heating one bird, or one small space, for a defined stretch of time. That's a different purchase from a coop heater, and it's usually a cheaper one.

If you're going to heat anyway, the least-bad way to do it

If the heater is going in regardless, screw a flat radiant panel to a wall or a stud. No clamp lamps. Wire the panel through a thermostat or a thermal cube so it only wakes up in the emergency band instead of running all night. (A thermal cube is a plug-in thermostat about the size of a fist; the common one closes around 35F and opens again around 45F.) Use a GFCI outlet and an outdoor-rated cord, run properly, not a daisy chain of indoor extension leads lying in the bedding. Plenty of keepers heat because a partner can't sleep otherwise, and we would rather that person did it well than badly.

Two honest expectations. A low-wattage panel won't raise the temperature of an uninsulated coop by much at all; it's a warm spot a bird can choose to stand near, and keeper after keeper reports the birds ignore it entirely. One keeper hung a radiant heater through a -30F snap and ended up holding a hen under it to demonstrate, at which point the hen side-stepped back down the roost. The second expectation is the number we couldn't find, which is how many degrees any given panel buys you in any given coop. That depends on insulation and air exchange, and anyone quoting a figure is guessing.

What to buy instead of a coop heater

Water is the winter problem that has to be solved every single day. A hen drinks a lot, a laying hen more, and a full waterer freezes solid overnight well before the birds are in any distress from the cold. Keepers who never run a watt of heat inside the coop still run a heated waterer or a heated base. That consistency is the strongest single pattern in everything we read for this piece, and it isn't what we expected to end up writing about.

There are two sensible paths. Buy a sealed all-in-one heated waterer and be done with it, which is where our top pick goes. Or, if you already own a double-wall metal fount, buy a heated base to stand it on and put the difference into hardware cloth. Don't put a plastic fount on a heated base. These bases are sold for metal founts, and the pairing isn't designed to work any other way.

After water, spend on a cheap min-max thermometer or a coop monitor, so that winter decisions come from a number instead of from standing in the dark feeling worried. Then hardware cloth and a jigsaw, for the vents you're about to cut. (Premier 1 sells mostly to smallholders, and the catalogue is its own rabbit hole if you have an evening spare.) The bottom line

Don't heat the coop. Close the drafts at bird level, open the vents above their heads, let the litter build, pick breeds that suit your winter, and put the money into water that stays liquid. That holds for the great majority of backyard flocks, in climates a long way colder than most readers keep birds in.

It doesn't hold if you're brooding chicks, nursing a sick hen, keeping bantams through a northern winter, or watching birds visibly fail in a cold snap far outside anything normal for your area. What keepers report

The do-not-heat position holds up best exactly where you would expect it to break. Across 170 comments from 120 keepers, the coldest accounts are the least heated ones: northern Minnesota at -37F, northern Vermont where -20F is a bad year, one keeper who calls -50F not unusual, all of them reporting healthy birds in insulated, well ventilated, unheated coops. The keepers who do heat fall into two groups worth separating.

Several bought radiant panels and report that the birds ignore them. A much smaller group used heat as an emergency rescue during a record cold snap, in one case in northern Canada at -38C with birds that had stopped walking, and switched it off when the weather broke. Heat lamps drew the sharpest reaction of anything in the threads, including several first-hand accounts of coops and barns burning down.

Do not use heat lamps. Every year in my area there are at least 2 barn fires because of heat lamps. The issue with supplying heat is that if the heat source goes out - like electric goes out or the unit fails - the chickens got used to the heat and were relying on it. You can use the deep litter method. It insulates from the ground and the compost can generate some heat. If you must use heat - use heat panels. They make them for chickens /livestock. Only heated thing in my coops are heated waterers.

DO NOT USE HEAT LAMPS IN YOUR COOP!!! They are a major fire hazard and your chickens don’t need supplemental heat (with some exceptions, such as bantams or sick/injured birds). Too many flocks have been lost to heat lamp fires for no reason.

Dust and electric combine to make fires, meaning you could be putting them at risk of an electrical fire for no real benefit to the chicken. 3) If your chickens are nice and warm and the power fails, or the heater fails, the temperate will plunge. Definitely don’t use heat lamps. Heat lamps would be a huge fire risk, imo. I’ve never heated my coop in 10 years in the Midwest. Chickens have natural insulation and can survive below freezing temperatures if they have a coop free of drafts but is well ventilated and have a proper diet. Also, your chickens won’t have acclimated to the cold which could be a problem if your power goes out. Spend your time and money making sure the coop is in good shape.

I use a heated water bowl because I don’t want to risk a coop fire 🔥 Chickens have a internal body temp of 107 degrees. If you use heat in the coop the chickens will never adapt to weather outside when it changes. Don’t Heat Coop!

We don’t heat our coop, but it is insulated. Just make sure there is no drafts in the coop and they’ll be fine.

We use no heat lamps or anything, we give them with warm water everyday as well as lots of protein rich foods like minnows.

A draft is any air movement in the living space. This robs the birds of heat because the cold air is constantly replacing the warmed air. Ventilation is gaps at the top to allow air to flow in without disturbing the ground level, and allows the heated, moist air to rise and escape.

I do not heat my coop. I put in one of those tractor supply panel heaters the first year but quickly learned the chickens cozied up to it exactly never. Now I just add extra litter and make sure to change out their water.

I have a hanging radiant heater (Sweeter Heater) and even when we had a -30°F cold snap a few years ago, silly girls wouldn't stand under it :< I'd hold one under to show her, "Look! This will warm your comb!" and they side step back down the roost as soon as I let them go. My newest batch does have one that is smarter than the rest of them and she uses it when it drops into the teens.

Brooder plates that stand on their side(looks like a computer monitor) are somewhat safer, imo. But they only have three settings, brooder, heat, off. I wouldn’t run one when I’m not home. Also, I only use mine when it’s below zero °F for more than 24 hours.

The feed stores will sell silly breeds like fluffy Wyandottes here in the Deep South, and Leghorns or tiny bantams up in the north, really not adapted to the local climate. Some people do need to make provisions for their weather or their chickens risk frostbite or death.

I have 12 birds, live in Northern Canada and we have had sustained -38C days/-45C nights. I have a well insulated coop with deep straw bedding. On the 3rd day of these temps I went out in the morning and 3 of the birds couldn't walk. They also had mostly stopped eating and drinking. I installed a roof-mounted infrared heater that's been able to bring the coop from -35C to a balmy -25C and it's been a game changer for their health and well-being. As soon as this cold snap ends I will turn off the heater and save it for emergencies, but I do think there are scenarios when supplemental heat can be helpful.

Northern Ohio here, and I don't heat our coop, never have. I do put a light in (NOT a heat light, just a simple LED), purely for the purposes of keeping them laying over the fall/winter. I do have a heater under the waterer to keep it thawed, same as I use a heated bucket for our goats/sheep/dogs.

I use plastics sheeting with a one inch gap at the top for ventilation. I use a heated base with a one gallon metal watering can inside the coop and one heated outside near a windbreak.
