Which flocks and setups it fits
Buy it for a mixed flock. That's the main case for it. Bantams, silkies, a broody who parks herself in the opening, chicks moving up from the brooder: those are the birds a sliding door is dangerous for, and this is the door in the category with the most owner evidence behind its sensor. Buy it also if you're off the property for whole days at a time and an open coop at dusk is the thing you think about at work. The alert is worth real money to that reader and close to nothing to a keeper who walks past the run every evening anyway.

An earlier version of this page sent house-sitters to ChickenGuard on the grounds that it had physical controls and the Omlet didn't. That was wrong, and we have taken it out. Omlet's own copy reads "Set your open and close times using your phone or the Autodoor's control panel", and the panel is on the unit at the end of a 2m cable. WiFi adds notifications, remote open and close, and Alexa and Google. Somebody feeding your birds for a fortnight can work either door without a phone.
Off-grid coops are the awkward case, and we would steer them away. Omlet sells no solar panel for this door. That leaves an off-grid keeper on a six-month AA cycle with no way to extend it, because the mains cable needs an outlet and the outlet is the thing that's missing. Run-Chicken sells a solar variant of the T50 and Omlet sells nothing of the kind, which for an off-grid coop settles it. (Omlet also sells rabbit hutches and cat furniture, which has no bearing on any of this.) We wouldn't put this door on a coop with no power run to it.
One group we aren't routing anywhere is the keepers cross-shopping the unbranded lookalikes on Amazon. Owners who have run more than one door are consistent about this, and the consistent answer is to stay away from the no-name units. The lookalikes publish no operating temperature and say nothing about a safety sensor beyond the word itself, where Omlet at least prints -4F and describes what the sensor does.

Power is 4x AA cells or a mains cable sold separately. Omlet publishes "6-month battery life (4xAA, not included)" for this door. That's the Smart door's own number, not a figure borrowed from somewhere else in the range, and the non-WiFi listing publishes the same six months. How it compares
