The reason to put a camera on a coop is rarely just the flock, though checking on the flock from the sofa is the part everyone admits to. It's the far corner of the yard at 2am. What actually breaks a coop camera
A coop camera has two common failure points, and the camera itself is usually not one of them. One is WiFi that won't reach the coop. The coop is the one building on most properties nobody ran a wire to, and it's often the far corner of the yard on top of that. The other is a monthly fee, which shows up after the camera is mounted and you go to play back last night and the app wants a card number. Night vision, weather sealing, resolution: the current outdoor cameras handle those well enough, and the ones keepers actually run cost about the price of a bag of feed. The real question is how you get power and a signal out to the run, and whether you'll pay every month to keep the video.
Everything below is sorted by that first decision, because it settles the rest. A camera you can run a cable to is a different purchase from one that has to live on a battery in the far corner of a run. We will take the wired case first, since it's the one we would pick when it's available, and then spend most of the page on the battery cameras, since that's where most coops actually are.
Getting a signal to a coop the router can't reach
This is the problem in the threads. Not night vision, not weather: WiFi. Keepers ask the same question over and over, which is whether a camera will even see the router from a coop at the bottom of the garden, and the answer keeps coming back the same. It depends, and the product page won't tell you. One keeper described the footage off a distant Ring camera as so broken up that he couldn't tell which hen was which, which is what a marginal signal looks like well before it drops out entirely.
Keepers close that gap three ways. The cheapest is a WiFi extender or a mesh point set halfway between the house and the coop, and it's what a lot of them do. One keeper runs a Blink off an extender pushed out roughly halfway to the run, and it holds up fine. Another route is to skip WiFi for cellular, a trail-camera-style setup on a data plan, which one keeper tried and regretted once the data bill arrived, and others in the threads warned would get pricey. Running a wire sounds like the most work while often being the least.
One keeper ran cat6 overhead about 120 feet and put a PoE switch on the end, and that single cable powers the camera and could feed several more, carrying all their video home. If the coop has no power and no signal, a length of outdoor ethernet solves both at once, which is exactly the case the wired pick below is built for. (Whether you can run it at all comes down to what sits between the house and the coop, and burying or hanging a hundred feet of cable is its own afternoon.)
Power: battery, solar, or a cord
If you can get mains power to the coop, most of this is moot; plug in a Wyze or a PoE camera and forget it. Most keepers can't, so the camera runs one of three ways. Batteries are the simplest. The subscription question
Wyze and Blink are cheap to buy, and both make their real margin on a monthly cloud plan. Out of the box, some of what you want sits behind that fee. On Blink, live view and motion alerts are free, but saving the motion clips isn't, unless you add local storage. You can get out from under the fee on both, and it's worth the effort. Blink stores clips to a USB stick once you add the sync module; one keeper runs four that way and has kept video locally for over a year with no plan at all. Wyze records continuously to a microSD card for free, which is the stronger free path of the two, though Wyze has changed what it gives away before and we wouldn't bet the card stays free forever. Reolink’s wired cameras sidestep the whole question, since they record to a local drive or an NVR and there's no cloud tier to buy.
The camera that taught the most keepers this lesson was a cellular one. A keeper bought two solar 4G cameras for a coop out of WiFi range and found the data subscription crazy expensive. That's the trap at the far end of the yard. The further the coop sits, the more it costs to reach it, right up until a wire becomes the cheap option again.
Wired versus battery, and which we would run
This is the real split, and both sides are right about something. The wired camp runs a cable, records locally and never pays a fee or thinks about a battery again. The battery camp points out, correctly, that most coops can't be reached with a cable, and that stringing a hundred feet of ethernet across a yard is more than most people will ever do. They're describing the same coop from different budgets and different back gardens.

The Reolink owners we found were on the battery Argus, the solar-and-WiFi half of the range, not the wired dome we point you to, and the keepers on PoE were running generic no-name cameras off a switch. We're pointing at the RLC-520A on Reolink's local-recording reputation and on how strong the wired case is, not on a keeper who ran that model through a winter, and we would rather say that than pretend the report exists. (The Argus line and the RLC dome are two different halves of what Reolink sells, which is easy to miss when both say Reolink on the box.)

Night vision, weather, and where to put it
The specs that sell cameras matter least here. Every camera in this guide has infrared night vision, which is the mode you'll actually use, since most of what you want to catch happens after dark. Keepers report it works; one runs a solar Reolink with good night vision that holds its charge through winter. Resolution past about 1080p is nice for telling one barred hen from another and not much else.
Weather is mostly handled and partly not. These are outdoor-rated cameras and they take rain and snow, but a coop is a hard place for electronics for a reason people miss, which is humidity. Hens breathe out a lot of water and their droppings are mostly water, and a closed coop goes damp within hours, which fogs a lens and corrodes contacts. Mount the camera high, up near the ventilation where the moist air is leaving, and out of the direct draft and spray, the same place you would put a vent and not a roost. One keeper built a small wooden shelter over a Ring camera that didn't seem rugged enough for the heavier rain, which is a reasonable thing to do.
A camera isn't a latch
A camera doesn't stop anything, and it helps to be clear about that before buying one. It tells you a raccoon is at the run. It doesn't keep him out, and that job belongs to half-inch hardware cloth, a buried apron and a lock a raccoon can't work open with his hands, because he'll have all night to try. Add the camera once the coop is already predator-proof, not instead of doing it. The predator threads describe the same scene every time: a keeper in bed hears the dogs, checks the phone, sees a bear on the coop camera, and gets outside to chase it off before it can test the wire.
What we would buy
Start with the coop, not the camera. If you can get a cable to it, run PoE and buy the Reolink RLC-520A: one wire, local recording, no fee. If you can't, and most people can't, buy a battery WiFi camera and solve the signal separately with an extender or a mesh point. Blink Outdoor 4 for battery life and the local-storage option, Wyze Cam v4 if the budget is tight and the coop is close.
Whatever you pick, settle the fee before you mount it. Decide up front whether you'll pay the plan or store video locally on a card or a stick, because the difference over a couple of years runs to more than the camera cost. And if you're covering a predator-heavy property with several cameras at once, the wired Reolink kit with its own recorder is the version that scales without a fee per camera.
