For most coops the Run-Chicken Door T50 is the door we would buy. You set opening and closing independently, once, and then you mostly leave it alone. Run-Chicken rates the T50 at about a year on two AA cells, and keeper reports in these threads run from one year to four, which is a wide enough spread that we wouldn't plan around any single number.
It's a guillotine door and it closes with real force. If you keep silkies or bantams, or you have one hen who likes to stand in the pop door at dusk, buy the Omlet Smart Automatic Chicken Coop Door instead: the sensor gives up at light resistance, and the app tells you when the door didn't close. Predator protection starts at the run, though. Half inch hardware cloth over every opening, with an apron staked or buried around the base, is the part that stops a raccoon, and an automatic door is the layer behind that.

An automatic coop door buys back your dusk, and the weekends you would otherwise spend arranging chicken cover. It doesn't make the coop safe. If your run is still wrapped in chicken wire, spend the money on half inch hardware cloth first and come back to the door afterwards.
Price isn't what separates these doors. Closing force is, and so is what the door does when a bird is standing under the panel. Power comes next, which for most keepers means batteries and how they behave in a hard freeze. And some of these doors have a button on the housing while others don't, which sounds like a small thing until you're out at the coop after dark with cold hands and a phone that has locked itself.
The calls below come out of 100 keeper comments pulled from BackYardChickens threads. Two brands carry almost the whole conversation there. Run-Chicken is named most often and Omlet second. We have no hands-on time with any of these doors, and where the owner reports thin out we have tried to say so rather than fill the gap.
Run-Chicken or Omlet, and how we split them
The T50 is our default answer. It sets opening and closing independently, on a clock, on light, or on sunrise, which matters because plenty of flocks go to roost well before the sun is down. Run-Chicken rates it at about a year on two AA cells. Keeper reports mostly run longer than that: one owner is four years into a set, another replaced a set after three, and a keeper running the solar Eternal on rechargeable cells swaps them proactively every eighteen months.
The Omlet answers a different worry. Its closing mechanism backs off at the first sign of resistance, and the owners who went looking for that limit, because they were nervous about it, say it springs back at almost nothing. That's worth paying for if you keep bantams or silkies, or if you're simply going to lie awake about it. The power side is messier. Omlet rates the non-WiFi door at about six months on four AA cells, and reports across Omlet doors run from six months to three and a half years, so battery life isn't how we would choose between the two of them.
Our ranking and the threads part company here. Keepers reach for Run-Chicken by a wide margin, and the ones who mention its safety reverse say it worked when a bird was in the way. We still put the Omlet ahead on that one axis: buy it if the crush question bothers you, and buy the Run-Chicken if you would rather forget the door is there. The dissent behind that call comes from a single keeper who runs both brands and describes the Run-Chicken pushing far harder before it lets go, hard enough that they block the opening with a leg while it cycles. That's one report and not a pattern, and nobody in these threads has posted an injury from a T50. We're ranking on the cost of being wrong rather than on the weight of the evidence, and the T50 is still the door we would put on our own coop.
Do you need one at all?
If you're home at dusk every night and the run is fully enclosed in half inch hardware cloth with an apron staked or buried around the base, an automatic door is convenience rather than protection. Convenience is a fine reason to buy one. What it won't do is stand in for the wire, and any pitch that tells you otherwise has skipped a step somewhere.
Runs fail, which is the reason to buy one anyway. One keeper had a run wrapped in half inch hardware cloth with quarter inch mesh under the bedding, and still lost young birds when a skunk got through between two panels. Another had stopped closing up at night, until a raccoon walked in and grabbed at a bird in the open. That keeper has an Omlet on the coop now. The one who lost birds to the skunk still has the hardware cloth up, and now walks the run every couple of weeks checking every tie on it.
Chicken wire keeps chickens in and stops nothing coming the other way. A thin sliding panel on a prefab coop won't hold against a determined raccoon either. None of the doors here change either of those facts, so fix the run first and automate the door after that.
The crush question, straight
Every door here drops a panel down a track, and every one of them claims some form of obstruction response. The Omlet backs off under light pressure, repeatedly, in the hands of owners who went looking for the limit. Run-Chicken is where we got stuck. Its behavior on an obstruction varies by model year, between stopping where it is and reopening to retry, and we couldn't pin down which revision does which. That's a safety behavior. We would rather leave the question open than pick whichever answer happens to suit our ranking. One keeper does report young silkies sitting in the open doorway at night without the door shutting on them, and that's one flock on one model year.
Two habits cost nothing. Set the close later than you think you need for the first two weeks, and walk out and count birds at bedtime, because what usually hurts a bird is a straggler and not a mechanism. And don't mount the door where a hen can perch in the opening, which is a coop layout problem that no sensor solves. If your pop door sits under a roost bar or beside a ledge, move one of them before you order the door.
If a door that can't close on a bird is a hard requirement for you rather than a preference, don't talk yourself into saving money on it. The Omlet is the one to buy in that case, and what the extra money buys is a sensor that gives up early, not a better motor or a longer battery.
Cold is where doors get exposed
Cold rarely kills the motor. It kills the batteries first, and then it freezes the track. The strongest cold report in these threads belongs to Omlet: a keeper in northern Canada running one at -40C, which is also -40F, who says it has never failed on the coldest days. (The two scales genuinely cross at -40, so that isn't a typo anyone made.) Run-Chicken has a keeper who took one from a week at -18C, roughly zero F, through months above 40C, roughly 104F, without a hitch. It also has a keeper in deep northern Canada whose door has frozen twice and needed a tap with a stick to free it.
Nobody in these threads has run one of these doors below -40C, so we won't claim any of them holds past that. Change the batteries on a calendar rather than on a low battery warning. A door with enough power to open and not enough to close is the worst of the failure modes, and a hard freeze is exactly when alkaline capacity falls off. One keeper swaps theirs every Halloween now, after the season's first extreme cold tanked a set and left them working the door by hand.
Where the opening sits changes the risk. A door that closes onto the coop floor has to cope with whatever piles up under it, and a ChickenGuard owner running two of them reports that the floor-level one handles a wildly variable depth of wood chips and ice without complaint. That's a real point in ChickenGuard's favor if your pop door sits at floor level and you run deep litter, which is a common enough combination in a cold climate.
One thing to get straight while you're thinking about winter. Leaving the pop door open at night isn't how you ventilate a coop. Ventilation belongs high on the walls or up in the gable, above roost height, where warm damp air can leave without crossing the birds. A pop door at floor level pulls cold air straight across roosting hens, which makes it a draft, and drafts at roost height are the thing keepers spend the winter trying to eliminate.
Power: battery, solar, or mains
Battery is the right default. Run-Chicken owners on the T50 report one to four years on a set, against Run-Chicken's own rating of about a year on two AA cells. Omlet owners report six months to three and a half years. Both of those are spreads rather than figures, and the short end is what you should plan around when you decide how often to walk out and check the door yourself.
Solar looks like the obvious upgrade and often isn't. The solar Run-Chicken Eternal that one keeper owns has no button on the door at all, so raising it early means finding a phone and pairing over Bluetooth. Mains is the real fix when the coop has an outlet nearby. One Omlet owner hardwired theirs after weak WiFi at the coop kept the door awake and drained the batteries.
App, Bluetooth, or a button you can press
Run-Chicken is Bluetooth, not WiFi. You have to be near the coop to change anything, which is fine on a normal back yard setup and useless when you're three states away and it's getting dark. The Omlet Smart door is WiFi, so you get remote control and, more usefully, an alert when the door didn't close. (Omlet is a British company, which comes up in the threads now and then.) We think that notification is the most valuable feature any of these ship, and it's the one thing here we would pay extra for without arguing about it.
Whatever you buy, insist on a manual control on the door itself, and confirm it on the exact model you're ordering. Some Run-Chicken owners have a physical open and close button and use it. Another keeper says the models with buttons have been dropped. The solar Eternal owner above has none. We couldn't establish which units currently ship with a button and which don't, and that's the detail most likely to have changed between the thread you read and the box that arrives.
Fit it to your coop before you order
Size the opening off the published figure rather than off a rule of thumb. The T50's opening is 8 by 10 inches, and Run-Chicken asks for roughly 12 inches of clear travel above the hole for the panel to sit in when it's up. A keeper describing the category generally puts a typical door around 30 cm tall, and points out that chickens stand taller than that at the shoulder and walk through anyway. Large breeds are where it gets tight. A keeper running Run-Chicken's solar Eternal says a Bielefelder hen barely fits through that door, and a Bielefelder is a big bird rather than a freakish one. (It's a German dual-purpose breed, if the name means nothing to you.)
Measure the flat, unobstructed area around your pop door before you buy anything. The mounting plate needs solid wood, and the panel needs clear travel above the opening. If a rail or a roof line sits right above the hole, a vertical door has nowhere to go, and one keeper in exactly that spot bought a swing-style door instead and has no regrets about it. That keeper also avoided the sliding designs, because of how often people report debris in the track stopping a close, which is a fair reading of the threads even though we would still buy a slider.
Don't overtighten the frame screws. A keeper three years into two Run-Chicken doors with no faults says the people they know who fight jams have pinched the frame with the mounting screws until the panel catches.
What we would skip, and the one we earn nothing on
There's no budget pick here and that's deliberate. The cheapest doors in this category are unbranded copies of the two above, and the failure mode of a bad one is a bird rather than a refund. One keeper bought a cheap unit whose advertised remote range of 50 meters turned out to be about 20 feet in practice.
The threads aren't unanimous and we won't pretend otherwise. At least one keeper is happy with a no-name swing door bought online, and says they can't imagine going back to doing it by hand. Our position is that a coop door is the wrong place to save money, because it's the only piece of gear on the coop that moves every day with a bird standing under it, and that's a judgment about risk rather than a measured fact about the cheap doors.
The one worth naming outside the affiliate list is the ADOR1, sold direct by its maker. We earn nothing on it and it goes in anyway, because the longest service lives in the threads sit behind ADOR doors, including a keeper who's fifteen years in with no problems. (The company is in Texas, which comes up in the threads more often than you would expect it to.) Its last call setting reopens the door for a few minutes after the first close and then shuts for the night, which is how the stragglers get in.
The keeper quoted below who describes a last call period, where the door opens back up about ten minutes after the first close to let stragglers in, is running an ADOR1. Their comment started with a link to the door, and our quote picks up after that link, which is why the brand name doesn't appear in the words themselves. Half their flock went in on time and half hung around outside. The last call setting is what fixed it. We haven't found the same feature on any of the three affiliate picks above, and we did go looking for it.

What keepers report
We came out of these 100 comments roughly where the keepers in them are, which doesn't always happen. Sentiment is lopsidedly positive. Keepers who fit one of these doors rarely go back to walking out at dusk.
Run-Chicken is the most-named door and draws the longest run-time reports, mostly about battery life and weather. Omlet draws the safety praise. Several owners describe poking at the obstruction sensor by hand because they were nervous about it, and it kept backing off.
The criticism is narrow but real. One Run-Chicken owner had a unit that never opened properly and a warranty claim that went nowhere, the keeper who runs both brands says the Run-Chicken closes far harder than the Omlet, and the Omlet WiFi model draws repeated battery-drain complaints, with one owner hardwiring theirs to fix it. Unbranded doors get warned about over and over, though one keeper is happy with a cheap swing-style unit. ChickenGuard shows up in four comments out of the hundred, which is why we discuss it above and don't pick it.
